Charlotte Meschede - Dietician

I am a Registered Dietitian and accredited Diabetes Educator. I qualified at the age of 20 and immediately immersed myself in the field of clinical nutrition. I have been in private practice since 1979 to date. This year marks my 43rd year as a qualified dietician. My focus is on assessing a patient’s individual status and tailoring a nutrition regimen which accommodates those needs. There is no such thing as a universal diet that suits everyone. The only perfect diet is the one that you can follow and that helps you achieve your personal goals. The latest research has focused on DNA analysis, the benefits of macronutrient manipulation, depending on your genotype and various forms of intermittent fasting. This takes the guesswork out of deciding which plan to follow and a personalized plan can then be formulated. My fields of expertise include diabetes and women’s health from pregnancy through to menopause and beyond. However, there isn’t an area in nutrition that I have not covered in my years in practice and I have experience in most areas.

Obesity and heart diseases are part and parcel of the diabetic pathophysiology and therefore any individual, male or female, who is experiencing any form of vascular disease, overweight and metabolic syndrome should engage in nutritional and lifestyle intervention. Auto-immune diseases are also an area of interest and as the epidemiology of these sometimes seriously debilitating conditions rises, so do research and clinical evidence supporting the implementation of appropriate and possible life-changing nutritional modifications.

7 August 2020 (1:00 - 4:00pm) - Healthy Diet, Healthy Body (Pre & Postnatal) for you and Baby - Charlotte Mecshede

This workshop will cover nutrition in planning for pregnancy as well as nutrition during pregnancy with the main focus on specific nutrient requirements for both mother and baby. We will have a discussion of the different nutrients required for each stage as per Carnegie Stages. Another discussion topic will be on red flags such as obesity in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and hypertension - all from a nutritional perspective. We will touch on being underweight in pregnancy, as it is more common than we think.

There is a lot of pressure on mothers to lose baby weight postpartum. This workshop will focus on ways to lose weight safely.

This workshop discussion is on nutritional requirements for lactation, contraindications to lactation, and nutritional requirements of an infant up to the introduction of solids.

Estuné Maritz - Specialist Birth & Postpartum Doula

I am a. I became a doula in 2010 and have been a successful businesswoman ever since. I have been educating, assisting, and growing with expecting mothers and couples for 11 years -counting. I have walked hand-in-hand with hundreds of couples and women from conception, straight through after birth. I have found my niche in 2016 and decided to become a VBAC and waterbirth specialist doula.

I am also one of the very few doulas capable of preforming Infant hydrotherapy. When I was growing up, my mother acted as both a midwife and lecturer, while home-schooling granted me the opportunity to obtain pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding knowledge at an incredibly young age.

Africa, now has a great doula breakthrough, where doulas can receive training and certification online. This breakthrough is called “Signature Doula”, which I am the grateful Director of. Signature Doula is the first online doula training program in Africa and the only institution providing infant hydrotherapy training for doulas, globally. I aim to educate as much as I possibly can. I strive to reach knowledge starved souls and to change the world, one birth at a time. It is an honour to serve the nation!

Postpartum depression can be on a continuum from baby blues to psychosis. There are several causal factors: Hormonal changes, ‘separation’ from a child in The womb, responsibility, life change, links to one’s own birth, and predisposing factors.
