How Pilates classes can boost your mood and build your brain
Often when we start out as a beginner Pilates student we focus only on the physical benefits of our workouts. We join a Pilates class and look up to the Pilates instructor, admiring their level of fitness, strength and toned physiques. But there is one thing that stands out at our BASI Pilates studios from Cape Town to Pretoria, and that is the energy and cheerfulness of the Pilates instructors. So why do they seem so happy? Well, there are more benefits to your Pilates training than you may think.
We’ve put together 5 of our favourite benefits that Pilates has on your mind:
Pilates training is a great way to relieve stress. While training you are focusing on the movements of your body and on your breathing, forgetting the traffic you fought through to get to work, the boss who yelled at you, or what you’re making for dinner for the family. Without even realising it, you are meditating in motion. This creates a space of calm for your mind to have a break, giving you more energy and focus.
Releases Happy Hormones
The level of physical activity in your Pilates class helps your brain produce feel-good hormones, serotonin and dopamine, and release endorphins. These lovely chemicals in your brain are the reason you feel so good (despite being so exhausted) after your Pilates training. Endorphins reduce your perception of pain and enhance feelings of pleasure and happiness. The happy hormones also aid in reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Seeing the physical changes to your body from your Pilates workout can have a huge impact on your self-esteem. But it’s not just looking good and the feel-good hormones tricking you into a sense of self-confidence, it’s also the feeling of accomplishment when you see your hard work paying off. The feeling of working towards a goal, reaching it, and setting a new goal. Whether your goal is weight loss and increased strength or starting a Pilates course and becoming a Pilates teacher, each step towards these goals will boost your self-confidence.
Boosts Your Brain
During your Pilates class, your heart rate raises which increases blood flow to your brain. This means more oxygen to your brain which improves memory and brain function. More than just a temporary improvement, Pilates training has a lasting effect on your brain as you age! It has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Consistent Pilates classes have been shown to improve quality of sleep and help fight insomnia. Better sleep means having more energy! And what’s better than waking up feeling rested and ready for the day?
With all these incredible benefits to your mental health, we look forward to seeing you at one of our BASI Pilates studios soon.
