Course Policies

BASI Pilates Course Prerequisites

Students will benefit from meeting these prerequisites, though they are not mandatory in order to begin a course.

  • Familiarity with the teachings of Joseph Pilates - We recommend attendance of a minimum of 10 BASI Pilates classes, at a BASI Pilates studio, prior to the course.
  • Familiarity in basic anatomy and physiology - Specialization in a related area of study, such as physical therapy or massage therapy is an added benefit, but not essential.
  • Experience in a related form of physical activity - Prior experience in an athletic activity develops body awareness and other attributes that are extremely beneficial to the study of Pilates.
  • Teaching experience is recommended - Any past teaching experience, even in an unrelated field, will contribute to you becoming a skilled teacher of the Pilates method.

BASI Pilates Course Requirements

  • Academic Study – Academic Study – 24 hours: All BASI Pilates Courses have a modular structure, which covers lectures, exercise analysis, practice and discussions. The theoretical component of the course is essential study. These hours are covered in the course. In the event that a student misses a module/s, private tuition is available from the Teacher Trainer at an additional hourly rate of R500.00 per hour, these extra fees are over and above the fees of the course. (effective Jan 2017).
  • Practical Work – Practical Work – 40 hours: Practical Work is individual practice on the mat by the student. It can be done at any location, e.g. home, an affiliated studio or the host studio. Students can practice on their own or in groups at any time or at a time arranged between the studio and student. Practice hours can be obtained from after the first section of the course. Please ensure that you are familiar with the studio policies when making use of the host or affiliated studio’s facilities. You may obtain about 50% of your practical hours by doing classes through Pilates Interactive www.pilatesinteractive.com or Pilates Anytime www.platesanytime.com

Note: For the duration of the course – about (4) four months in total (see expiry date on student card, students may attend FREE group MAT classes at any of the BASI SA Host studios (NOT AFFILIATED STUDIOS). Normal class fees are applicable after the (4) four months have expired (see expiry date on student card.

Observation - 20 hours: Observation hours require that the student observe how seasoned BASI Pilates instructors teach (mat & equipment) classes. Observation hours can be obtained at either a BASI host studio or an affiliated studio at a time arranged between the studio & student. Observation hours can be obtained from after the first section of the course. Please ensure that you are familiar with the studio policies when making use of the host or affiliated studio’s facilities. Teaching hours can be obtained from after the first section of the course.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL students need to have their student cards on their person every time they enter a Host studio, as you receive free group Mat classes during your start and expiry dates on your student card. No Card No Free Group Mat class!!! If your expiry date has been reached and you still need to complete your hours unfortunatley you will no longer be entitled to free group Mat classes, the student will then need to pay (Normal studio rates). If the student is still in need of observation or teaching hours after the student card expiry date has been reached the Host studio will charge the student on entry to the studio a daily surcharge of R50.00 for the teaching and observation hours.

Note: Log sheets are e-mailed after the first section of the course, where you need to keep track of the required hours. The sheets need to be signed by a person of authority at the applicable studio. If you e.g. practice at home and there is no one to sign the sheet, just make a note of it, but still log it. It is impossible for Teacher Trainers to continuously watch students practice and teach, so please keep track of all questions and concerns you have and we’ll gladly address them at the student tutorials.
